Here is how Private Ear allows you to securely record events:
When you first install and load Private Ear you will be asked to enter a password. This will be used to ensure only you have access to the recordings you create. After you choose your password, hit the Record button to start the recording process.
You will be taken to a screen displaying the current sound levels in the room. Use the slider to set the Sound Threshold above the ambient sounds in the room. Only sounds louder than this Sound Threshold will be recorded. This allows you to save disk space by only recording when someone is talking or some event is taking place.
When you are satisfied with your Sound Threshold, hit the Start Recording button. The screen will change to indicate Private Ear is currently recording. You can now set your iPhone down and it will record any sounds above the Sound Threshold.
When you wish to stop recording, hit End Recording. You will be prompted for your password again to prevent others from gaining access to your recordings. After you enter your password and hit Activate Private Ear, select Analyze Recordings to listen to the recording you just made as well as any previous recordings.
***TIPS
- Backup your recordings to your computer using the Private Ear Client (Available for OSX at www.excelltechmobile.com/privateear.html)
- Make sure nothing is directly obstructing the iPhones microphone when you set it down.
- If you forget your password you will have to delete Private Ear and download it again (there will be no charge when you download it again). Your recordings will be lost.
- Headphones recommended for listening to playback.
***Note: If you have a iPod Touch, the Apple Earphone with Remote and Mic attachment is REQUIRED for this application to work.

So far so good. I like that the actual recording also have a current recording time to when it had been recorded. Although u should keep it charged so ur phone run out of battery. And keep it out of sight so no one will see it and take ur phone. I highly suggest u take my advise.
It works well on my phone. Only small prob is that it sometimes has a file that is 0kb taking up space. Other than that, its great! Maybe a version of this using the video function the 3GS already has & the 3G just started having (unlocked & unjailbroken) would be even better.
I find it to work very well but it would be nice if there was a way to keep it recording in the background so if the phone is discovered and somebody hits the home button it wont be evident that its recording.
Some bad moments
I put my iPad in my room for 3 day with this on. The test I did worked. it could work good but it failed me. it hit the max thresh hold of recording. I sat there for 20 mins clicking ok hoping to even just get a few recording but once it hit the limit it dump all of them. No autosave the set up was pointless. Good thing I set my computer to record too. Almost mess my one chance to catch gf to trust her or not. Now I have break up with my gf and this app didnt help me at all. If fixed with up date I would give 5 stars. Good app maby for a few hours not days...
I have sent 4 emails of the last 2 weeks and no response at all. I agree with above. The file does me no good if I cant download it.
The app works okay and Ive been able to listen to my files however after you record your file and you walk to listen to it, the app shuts down and takes me to my home screen. Private Ear wont let me finish listening to my files until i reboot my iPhone.
Recommend the developers take a look at this!
I works for me though I need to test it some more. I just purchase it today and test it for a short while and I like it. Speed of apps could be better.
This has become a new hobby of mine. I set it to record while Im sleeping so that when I talk in my sleep, I can hear what Im saying the next morning. Sure, a lot of it is snoring, but I caught myself saying "hm, what the hell? Ky goddamn sell" or something like that. And then I caught me talking some gibberish that sounds like some weird African or Indian dialect. Fun stuff!
My only complaint is not being able to export to my computer. My rating will by 5 stars when this is fixed.
It does what I want (just bought the app) but it NEEDS better quality recording. Please make it record better quality sound. I will give more stars if updated.
